Boldt Castle Stopover Cruise: the Route That Docks

The castle exists because of a marriage and stands unfinished because of a death. George C. Boldt, who ran the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, began building a 120-room summer palace on Heart Island for his wife Louise around the turn of the century. In January 1904 she died, and his telegram to the island halted every hammer that same day. He never set foot on the island again. The empty shell weathered seven decades of vandals and winters before the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took it over in 1977 and began the restoration that continues now. Reviews from this cruise keep circling back to that telegram; visitors board expecting a rich man's folly and disembark quiet.

The stopover is self-guided, and the headline building is one stop of several. Heart Island also holds the Alster Tower, a stone playhouse built for the Boldt children; the Power House standing on its own rock offshore; a network of tunnels; and terraced formal gardens. Across a narrow channel sits the Yacht House, where the family kept its wooden launches. A short boat shuttles visitors over during the stopover, and the Yacht House charges its own small fee at the door.

Pacing the stopover

Two hours sounds short for all of that, and it is short if you spend it in the wrong order. Passengers who head straight into the castle tend to surface 90 minutes later with the Yacht House unvisited. The crew's standing advice, echoed in review after review, runs the other way: ride to the Yacht House first, walk the grounds and tunnels second, save the castle interior for last.

In that order the two hours cover everything without a sprint. The whole visit is on your feet, so treat it as a two-hour walk and dress for it.

The water around Heart Island reads as Canadian, but the island itself belongs to the United States, and stepping off the boat means entering the country. US Customs and Border Protection clears the vessel as part of the stopover. That is the reason the document rule bends for nobody: a valid passport or NEXUS card for every passenger, infants included, no exceptions. Citizens of countries other than Canada and the US should also confirm whether an ESTA or visitor visa applies to them, and should do it while booking rather than at the dock.

Check-in at the Gananoque town dock opens 30 minutes before departure, and staff want documents in hand then. Passengers describe the clearance as a few unremarkable minutes when the paperwork checks out, and a refused boarding when it does not. The operator has no discretion here; the rule belongs to a federal agency, not to the boat.
